Duqm to receive natural gas supply by 2019

Oman Gas Company will start natural gas supply to the Duqm special economic zone by 2019, the company’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Sultan bin Hamad Al Bartamani, said.

"During the past, several contracts and tenders for the projects have been awarded, including tenders for the supply of gas pipes and extending gas pipes from Saih Nahida to Duqm. More tenders and contracts for this vital project will be awarded during this year and will result in a qualitative leap in SEZD," Al Bartamani added.

Availability of natural gas at Duqm will help attract investment as several industries, including a methanol project mooted by a Chinese group, are waiting for gas as feed stock.

The contractor of the gas pipeline extension project from Saih Nahida to Duqm has recently initiated work," he noted.

As for the volume of gas to be pumped to Duqm, Al Bartamani said the gas supply station is expected to receive about 15 million cubic meters of gas per day in the first phase as per the agreement made between the Ministry of Oil and Gas and Oman Gas Company (OGC).

This quantity is enough for feeding the Duqm Refinery, Marafiq Company and the other industries that will be set up in the zone.

As per the design, the station's capacity may be increased to 25 million cubic meters per day when the need arises, depending on the SEZD's expansion in the future. The Saih Nahida plant will receive gas from BP-Oman's Khazzan oilfield and from PDO's Saih Nahida and Saih Rawl oilfields.

Production of natural gas from Block 61 of the Khazzan gas field project will begin latest by September.

The project is expected to produce 500 million cubic feet of natural gas initially and this will eventually increase to touch 1 billion cubic feet within a few months of starting production.
