Omani entrepreneurs outline success journey

The National Business Centre (NBC), which pertains to the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE), on Wednesday organised a Reyooq event entitled Successes and Obstacles at Basta Majan Café.

The event featured the entrepreneurship journey of Shaima Al Lawati, Founder and Managing Director of Destination Sustainability, and Moatasim Al Balushi, Chief Executive Officer of eCity for IT Services.

Al Lawati stated that Destination Sustainability was a personlised consultancy and research firm in Corporate Sustainability and Social Responsibility. The company brings together the best international practices, global research and innovation with local expertise and regional cultural awareness in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility, stakeholder and community engagement, sustainability systems and social impact measurement. Al Lawati added that she began working in the private sector and then contributed to civil society institutions, which marked a turning point in her journey.

Regarding the challenges she faced during her entrepreneurship journey, Al Lawati noted that community service was a new field and there was a need to gain the market’s confidence.

Additionally, she mentioned that the lack of financial background and family commitments are other challenges facing entrepreneurs. “In fact, the challenges vary from one entrepreneur to another. Therefore, it is essential to enjoy ambition and patience in order to be able to reach the desired goal,” she added.

Al Lawati also noted that the presence of incubators such as Riyada and the National Business Centre played an important role in encouraging Omani youth to enter the entrepreneurship field and develop their passion and skills in various fields.

On his part, Al Balushi noted that eCity for IT Services was established in early 2015 to provide creative IT solutions and services through a 100 per cent Omani team. The services of the company include infrastructure planning and development, data protection strategy, maintenance, implementing licences, and monitoring of hardware and software.

Al Balushi noted that he was a graduate of telecom engineering and his passion in electronics, games and the internet had led him to get involved in the IT field. On the obstacles he faced during his journey, Al Balushi pointed to the lack of information on business, as his study background and interests were in the technical field. However, his experience in entrepreneurship contributed to developing his skills in various areas.

“Patience and passion are two aspects that ensure continuity in entrepreneurship,” Al Balushi added.

It should be noted that this event is the third Reyooq session held this year. This year, NBC aims at holding four sessions of Reyooq, highlighting four varied significant sectors. It is worth mentioning that the National Business Centre is an initiative launched by the PEIE at the Knowledge Oasis Muscat to offer promising Omani entrepreneurs a platform to develop their business ideas and advance them into growing ventures. The centre provides a premier platform for Omani entrepreneurs by offering business development support and guidance, training and mentoring, access to markets and industry experts, and state-of-the-art and fully equipped office space, meeting rooms and presentation facilities.
