Water, Electricity production in Sultanate registers increase

Oman has registered rise in water (5.7 per cent) and electricity production (2.2 per cent) ending September this year compared to the same period of 2017.

Figures released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) show that water production at the end of September this year reached 351.3mn m3, an increase of 5.7 per cent from the end of September 2017, when it was 332.3mn m3. In the Governorate of Muscat, the water production grew by 4.9 per cent to reach 155.9mn m3 compared to 148.7mn m3 at the end of September 2017.

Water production also rose in the Governorate of Dhofar by 7.6 per cent until the end of September 2018 to reach 46.8mn m3 compared to last year, when the production was 43.52mn m3.

The total water production in other governorates at the end of September 2018 was 148.5mn m3, a rise of six per cent from the end of September 2017, when the production reached 140.1mn m3.

2.2% rise in electricity production

The total electricity production until the end of September 2018 rose by 2.2 per cent to reach 29,169.1GW per hour compared to the end of the same month in 2017, which registered a production of 28,554.3GW per hour, the National Centre for Statistics and Information stated.

The total production in the governorates of North and South Batinah, and Dhahirah reached 15,183GW per hour, recording an average increase of 2.6 per cent over the same period in 2017, when the production was 14,805.2GW per hour.

The governorates of the North and South Sharqiyah posted a 1.2 per cent rise in electricity production to reach 6,617.3GW per hour compared to an output of 6,540.9GW last year. The total electricity production in the Governorate of Muscat rose by 4.5 per cent during the nine-month period this year to reach 3,082.1GW per hour compared to 2,949.3GW during the same period in 2017.

In Dhofar, the total electricity production fell by 5.8 per cent until the end of September 2018 to reach 2,642.3GW per hour compared to the end of September 2017, when it was 2,805.1GW per hour.

The total electricity production in the Governorate of Dakhliyah was recorded at 943.5GW per hour, an increase of 7.1 per cent compared to 880.8GW at the end of September 2017.

In the Governorate of Al Wusta, the total electricity production increased by 32.4 per cent during the nine-month period this year, reaching 354.2GW per hour against 267.6GW per hour in 2017, the data revealed.

The total electricity production in the Governorate of Musandam also increased by 13.5 per cent till the end of September 2018, reaching 346.7GW per hour compared to last year, when it was 305.5GW per hour.

The net figures are inclusive of purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company from local power generating entities, as well as output from auto-generators and diesel rental units.

Oman’s net electricity production in the first nine months of 2018 saw a rise of 2.9 per cent to touch 29,064.2GW per hour compared to 28,233.8GW per hour in the 2017 period.

As per the NCSI data, the governorates of North and South Batinah, and Dhahirah topped the list with the highest net electricity production, reaching 15,102.7GW per hour from 14,678.2GW per hour in 2017.

The governorates of North and South Sharqiyah ranked second, recorded a rise by 1.3 per cent to reach 6,613GW per hour by the end of September 2018 compared to 6,529.1GW in 2017.

The net electricity production in Muscat was 3,087.2GW per hour, an increase of 8.1 per cent compared to last year, which saw the net production at 2,855.4GW per hour.

Dhofar recorded a net electricity production of 2,522GW per hour in the first nine months of 2018, down six per cent compared to the same period in 2017, when it was 2,683GW per hour, whereas net electricity production in Dakhliyah rose by 7.1 per cent to 937.4GW compared to 874.9GW per hour in 2017.

The net electricity production in Al Wusta rose by 45.2 per cent to reach 464.6GW per hour compared to 320GW per hour in 2017.

An increase in net electricity production by 14.9 per cent was recorded in Musandam to reach 336.8GW per hour against 293.2GW recorded in 2017.
