Saudi Arabia becomes top market for sultanate’s non-oil exports

Saudi Arabia has emerged as the biggest market for Oman’s non-oil exports this year as the UAE, which remained biggest market for the sultanate’s non-oil exports for past many years, came at second place in terms of the value of non-oil Omani exports.

Oman’s non-oil exports to Saudi Arabia surged by more than 57 per cent to RO373.4mn in the first half of 2019 compared to RO237.5mn in the corresponding period of 2018. Exports to the UAE dropped 19 per cent to RO292.5mn this year from RO360.6mn in the first six months of 2018, data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) showed.

Singapore also emerged as one of the biggest markets for Oman’s non-oil exports in 2019 as total exports to the South East Asian nation jumped more than 16 times to RO148.6mn against RO9.2mn in the first half of 2018. However, Oman’s total non-oil exports to the world decreased 6.9 per cent to RO1.625bn during the January–June period of 2019 compared to RO1.745bn a year ago.

Exports to Qatar fell more than 30 per cent to RO126mn in the first half of 2019 compared to RO180.4mn in the corresponding period of 2018.

Value of non-oil shipments to India decreased 0.8 per cent to RO139.7mn this year. Total re-exports from Oman also dropped 17.5 per cent in the first half of 2019 to RO726.9mn compared to RO881.4mn in the same period a year ago.

Re-exports to the UAE declined 3 per cent to RO197mn, while re-exports to Qatar fell 25 per cent to RO142.9mn against RO189.8mn in the same period of 2018. Re-exports to Iran, however, grew 55.6 per cent to RO112.9mn in the January–June period of 2019 from RO72.5mn in the same period of last year.
