Tender floated for construction of Oman’s first integrated vehicle hub

Promising potential: Dedicated zone for automotive-related commercial services to cover 1-million sq metre site in Suhar Industrial City.

The Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (Madayn) is pressing ahead with plans for the development of Oman’s first integrated vehicle hub at Suhar Industrial City on the Sultanate’s North Al Batinah coast.

The project, formally known as Madayn Vehicle Complex (‘Motcar’), is proposed to be established on a roughly one million sq metre site within Suhar Industrial City. As an integrated hub for investments centring around the automotive industry, chiefly trading in vehicles, auto parts and accessories, and related services, Motcar is expected to position the Sultanate as a regional centre for automotive-related commercial services, according to Madayn.

Earlier this week, Madayn – which oversees an expanding network of manufacturing zones in the Sultanate – invited suitably qualified construction firms to bid for its contract to build the basic infrastructure for the proposed Motcar project. The infrastructure elements, along with utilities and support facilities, will be implemented based on a master plan that sets out a long-term strategy for its development.

Plans for a dedicated zone for automotive commercial services were first unveiled earlier this year as part of Madayn’s 2040 Vision strategy for growth. Motorcar, it noted, would serve as a regional centre for the import and re-export of cars, machinery and related services to and from various countries with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa region.

By locating the Vehicle Complex in the industrial port city of Suhar, Madayn hopes to capitalise on synergies offered by the presence – existing and proposed – of a string of automotive-related enterprises in the North Al Batinah region. Sohar Freezone, which adjoins Sohar Port, already hosts a major warehousing and distribution hub for new cars imported and transshipped via the nearby port.

Phase 2 of Sohar Freezone, which was recently opened up for investment, is also being promoted as an attractive destination for investment in, among other things, automotive spares and parts. Following the recent commissioning of the multibillion-dollar Liwa Plastics Complex within the industrial port, the abundance of locally available polymers – key ingredients in the manufacture of automotive parts – bodes well for the growth of a major industry in the area.

The Motorcar project is expected to give rise to, among other activities, the growth of a large-scale pre-owned car market in Suhar, catering primarily to overseas markets. This will inevitably also spawn the growth of ancillary services around car parts and accessories, tyres, lubricants, upholstery works, automotive repair equipment, and vehicle scrapping and recycling, among other activities.

Interested bidders have until July 14, 2021, to submit their offers for the Motcar construction tender.
